Somehow, the character of not been truthful has crept into our homes and found a place to stay. We lie to our spouses, our children, our parents, and outsiders on a daily basis in the name of living in peace with one another, so much so that it is perceived to be the 'ideal' thing and the uncool person is she who cannot cook up a story quickly to cover up herself.
But where is it that we have gone wrong? Is it true that it is only by lying that we can live happily with one another?
Like for every problem in this world, Islam has a remedy, and the problem must have come about as a result of not following the pure teachings of Islam.
In a beautiful yet deep hadith, the prophet (saw) said:"Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person. Falsehood leads to Al-Fajur (i.e. wickedness, evil-doing), and Al-Fajur leads to the (Hell) Fire, and a man may keep on telling lies till he is written before Allah, a liar."[Sahih Bukhari -Book 73: Hadith 116]
The thing is when we are truthful, we subconsciously avoid doing the wrong things we do, i.e the things which are not upright. This is so because we don't want to lie and saying the truth might cause more harm than good. So therefore, we forsake the wrong action for the right one, which undoubtedly makes us more righteous, as the prophet (saw) said will happen.
But looking at the matter up close, is the act of lying something we should treat lightly?. It has been explained very plainly in the following hadith that a believer should not be liar.
“Can a believer be a coward? He said, “Yes, he can be coward. Then it was asked whether a believer could be a miser? He replied, “Yes, he can be a miser”, it was then asked whether a believer could be a liar? He replied, “No, a believer cannot be a liar.” (Imam Malik, Mishkaat).
And likewise, Allah (subhanahu wa ta'alah) had already forbidden this act in various verses in the Qur'an:
O you who believe! Why do you say that which you do not do? Most hateful it is with Allah that you say that which you do not do. (Q61:2-3)
O you who believe! Keep your duty to Allah and fear Him, and speak (always) the truth. (Q33:70)
So sisters, lets put our act together and do the right thing. No more telling lies to our spouses, our parents, friends or anyone else. no lie is too little, and we may can make that conscious effort to avoid them. Let's be truthful for the sake of Allah, Our Lord, The Careful Account taker of everything we do (see Q4:86).
